研究題目「Cu supported on Al2O3 as a substitute for Pt-group metals in automotive three-way catalysts」
The replacement of precious metals (Rh, Pd, and Pt) in three-way catalysts (TWC) with inexpensive and earth abundant metal alternatives is challenging in automotive technology, for both conventional internal combustion engines and the state-of-the-art hybrid-electrified powertrains. Cu is a promising candidate here. Thus, the catalytic performance can be improved by controlling the local structure of active Cu sites. However, a clear understanding of the Cu catalyst is complex to attain due to its diverse chemical composition, synthesis route, and calcination temperature. Moreover, the oxidation state of Cu depends on the oxygen pressure and the temperature; and during exhaust gas emission the temperature and the concentration of oxygen is not constant. Therefore, in this study we focused on exploring the effect of oxidation state of Cu catalyst supported on Al2O3 towards its catalytic activity in simulated TWC reactions in a wet gas stream. Receiving this award has given me confidence and motivation to pursue future research.
